Procedure Steps

ReLEx® SMILE

Refractive Lenticule Extraction, Small Incision Lenticule Extraction or ReLEx® SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure that is bladeless, flapless and gentle.

After the laser creates a refractive lenticule and a small incision of 4mm on the cornea surface, the eye surgeon carefully removes the lenticule which changes the shape of the cornea for vision correction.

It can correct high myopia (500-1000 degrees) and astigmatism (up to 500 degrees) and is beneficial for dry eyes since not having a flap preserves the corneal structure.

There is minimal downtime after ReLEx® SMILE and you will be able to return to your daily activities with good vision after a day of rest.

LASIK

Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, commonly known as LASIK is a flap-based procedure.

An incision of about 20mm is created on the corneal surface and the flap is folded back to expose the corneal bed. The excimer laser then reshapes and polishes the cornea to correct the refractive errors.

LASIK has been highly sought after for the past 20 years due to its excellent outcomes and reduced post-surgery discomfort as compared to the advanced surface ablation techniques.

Recovery time is quick. However, some patients may experience temporary dry eyes for a week to a few months after surgery. Dry eyes can be easily managed with lubricating eye drops.

Advanced Surface Ablation

Epi-LASIK, LASEK and PRK are Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) techniques that have no flap and no incision.

The cornea epithelium (outer layer) is first removed by either an automated blade, alcohol solution or a blunt surgical instrument before the laser is applied to the underlying cornea for vision correction.

Usually, ASA procedures are usually performed on patients who are not suitable for LASIK due with very thin or steep corneas to preserve as much corneal strength as possible.

Recovery usually takes about 3 to 5 days, during which varying degrees of pain and discomfort might be experienced.
