Refractive Errors
Your eyes see clearly when light focuses directly on the retina. If the eye shape, cornea, or lens is not ideal, the image falls in the wrong place, leading to refractive errors. These are the most common causes of blurred vision worldwide.
Types of Refractive Errors & How We Treat Them
Myopia (Short-sightedness / Near-sightedness)
- Problem: Distant objects appear blurry because the eyeball is too long or the cornea too curved.
- Treatment: Correctable with ZEISS SMILE® pro or LASIK, which reshape the cornea so light focuses directly on the retina.
Hyperopia (Long-sightedness / Far-sightedness)
- Problem: Near objects appear blurry because the eyeball is too short or the cornea too flat.
- Treatment: Laser vision correction (LASIK, ZEISS SMILE® pro) restores proper focusing, reducing the need for glasses.
Astigmatism (“San Guang”)
- Problem: Irregular corneal curvature causes vision to be distorted or stretched at all distances.
- Treatment: ZEISS SMILE® pro and LASIK precisely reshape the cornea, correcting uneven curvature.
Presbyopia (“Lao Hua”)
- Age-related loss of near vision.
Treatment for Refractive Errors
While spectacles and contact lenses are common, they come with inconvenience and risk. For long-term clarity:
Laser Vision Correction is the most effective solution:
- ZEISS SMILE® pro – flapless, minimally invasive, quicker recovery, fewer dry eye symptoms.
- LASIK – safe, proven, effective for most patients.
- ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) – for patients unsuitable for LASIK/SMILE®.
Result: Reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses, better quality of life.
